Had to get up horribly early because of the painters.

Ma and Pa left for the day for the Guildhall do. Ma looked super in her long dress. Chumpy and me completely tidied up downstairs; it hasn’t looked so good for years.

Unsatisfying day work-wise. I tried to get down to my German essay in the sitting-room but Chump was there and we spent the whole time being daft. Watched a TV programme on advertising in America; it is CHRONIC.

Listened to Radio Caroline until late. I’ve gone completely off Johnnie Walker. On November 11th he said he was doing the Frinton Pier headlight thing with a couple called Terry and Pat. Well, they revealed, among other things, that they were getting married on December 9th. Now he’s received a letter from this chap saying it was all a hoax - there were 20 of them doing it, all killing themselves. For the rest of the evening Johnnie never stopped going on about it. First he says, “I can laugh at myself, I realise you’ve had me on, I don’t hold a grudge or anything" - then he says the laugh’s on him, because it shows what sort of nut-cases they are! If they can’t find a better way of spending their Saturday night, poor things, they obviously can’t find girlfriends, etc etc. As far as I’m concerned,  he was making more and more a fool of himself every second: it shows he can’t take a joke. Personally I think those boys were pretty enterprising types. Why shouldn’t they have a good laugh once in a while? Johnnie Walker ought to be grateful at least they've admitted it.

Honestly. I feel like writing to him and asking him what all the fuss was about.
